He also had two grave war wounds which left him permanently partially disabled.
Time spent recovering from those wounds and the resulting infections, together with a year overseas as an orderly in Dalhousie's Number Seven Base Hospital, meant he had spent almost half of his war in hospitals or recovering in convalescent homes.
Perhaps as a result, he had decided to change his career plans and become a medical doctor.
Unfortunately,some highly ambitious medical students who successfully avoided war service ( such as Howard Florey and Chester Keefer) had a vital four year start on him in his new profession.
Despite all this, I argue that the war did not fundamentally change his personality.

Un-Super Heroes : a biography of NEW DEAL penicillin ...
The post-modern NEW DEAL extrusion onto the landscape of the Modern Age
British Conservative wartime penicillin or American Republican wartime penicillin , if they had succeeded, would have totally altered the generally favourable image we have today of penicillin.
It would have been regarded as needlessly expensive and originally available - by design - to only the richest and whitest classes.
By contrast the wartime penicillin we actually got in the end - NEW DEAL penicillin - is probably the world's best known medicine almost entirely because it is also the most beloved of lifesaver.
It remains non-patented ( in the public domain) and naturally made and hence both cheap and available to all nations to make.
During the war this non-patented natural penicillin was made available to all those in the world dying from lack of it only because the New Deal oriented super agency known as the WPB (War Production Board) willed it to be so.
In many accounts, the New Deal was definitely on its way out in Washington and America by 1945 and the gift of cheap natural penicillin for all was merely its final, departing, gift.
But in my view, the informally postmodern New Deal morphed seamlessly into formal post-Modernity in late 1945 and the gift of cheap natural penicillin for all became merely postmodernity's opening gambit...

How big is the metropolitan New York City area ?
For people like newspaper reporters, sales reps and professionals delivering a lecture or paper, the furthest extent of metro NYC is pretty easy to measure.
If you can get into work early, check in and then take a car or train to the location, do some useful business and then return late to the office, and then still later home to sleep in one's own bed, it's still metro.
Rising early and home late may be hellish and the checkins at the office bookending your work day may be mere tokens but it avoids that expensive hotel room and best of two days (or more) away from family and office.
The time of day for your key business is paramount - an evening lecture or presentation makes the circle of distances evoke by words 'metro NYC 'very much much smaller.

Wartime Penicillin, told as sharp clash of vivid personalities and philosophies -- not as a dry scientific treatise or as cheerleading fantasy of selfless wartime cooperation
If you have never read a book about the exciting saga of wartime penicillin that is hardly because of a lack of choice.
Dozens and dozens of authors have written well researched (and well regarded) renderings of the dramatic story, even if we discount the mass of uniformly dreadful books directed at children.
But despite a potential reading audience that since 1944 that must number in the billions, none of these books can be said to be a national - let alone international - best seller.
Even more unexpectedly, there has never been any Hollywood movie about the wartime penicillin saga, let alone any successful one.
All these penicillin books to date suffer from one honest, sincere but erroneous assumption.
All their authors are united in seeing a single reason for the 15 years of delay between fleming's discovery of penicillin and when we in the rest of the world first heard about.
The same explanation is also used to account for the 25 year delay between the 1928 discovery and when it became readily available to almost all of the world's dying (regardless of income or location) during the 1950s.
They believe that all the delays in bringing penicillin to a world that badly needed it can blamed on technical flaws in our sincere efforts to purify and preserve penicillin.
These steps were judged essential before it could be safely injected into the dying and cast as not really not surprising delays ---- once the reader is shown the complex nature of the penicillin molecule .
These authors consider briefly and then quickly dismiss the idea that the delays were really the result of character cum intellectual flaws ... in the complex natures of those we initially allowed to lead the penicillin effort.
These authors can hardly be accused of sugarcoating the personality clashes among the best known of the penicillin leaders or of denying differences between the various international organizations involved .
But neither do they portray these clashes as lying at the very heart of the causes for the years of delays.
Powerful individuals and organizations holding widely popular views lay behind the delay to bring penicillin to the whole world.
In the beginning only a handful of individuals with few resources refused to accept the validity of these excuses for the delay in penicillin's mass introduction.
I call them , collectively, the Indie PEN movement.
Against overwhelming odds, this handful took on Big Pharma, Big Science , Big Government at the height of a Total War - and then, quite unexpectedly, totally triumphed at the very end.
A classic tortoise and hare story.
These personality (cum intellectual) flaws were not merely of a petty pattern or whimsically inconsistent .
They are seriously held, consistently represented and strongly sustained .
The conflicting intellectual arguments and those who made them were internally consistent.
That is , the differing intellectual positions were held by individuals whose personalities were of those people who generally held those particular intellectual viewpoints.
This is why I say it is hard to separate out character flaws from intellectual flaws.
Those differences ran deep - deep as can be.
They reflected deeply held personal or institutional philosophies ("Weltanschauung") that differed in almost every way possible.
Some of those philosophies that lay behind the delays to bring penicillin to the masses would be regarded as deeply repugnant today.
I certain think that way about them - I am not shy in saying that I see more than a whiff of the clash between absolute good and absolute evil buried deep inside the wartime penicillin saga.
And I also see those ignoble philosophies as the main reason for all the delays.
They lay behind the secret drive to weaponize penicillin and to deny it to most of the wartime world.
So we have before us a number of vivid , strongly etched characters (with strongly held and violently different worldviews ) clashing repeatedly .
I don't think I am wrong in thinking that this will all make for a truly propulsive page turner --- one that also happens to better represent the reality of the war years.
Seventy five years on, its finally time that we dropped all remnants of the wartime Pollyanna rah rah cheerleading.
Let's let the story of wartime penicillin finally unfold as it truly happened , ignoble warts and selfless heroics and all ....

Wartime penicillin only cures one NEW disease , until the Allied medical elite put a stop to its efforts...
Allied doctors "Code Slow" minorities, immigrants and poor to certain death
Sometimes true facts are far stranger than anything that bad acid and bad Hollywood writing could dream up.
Fact is, wartime penicillin's so called 'miracles' usually consisted in curing many diseases than earlier medicines also cured --- albeit very fitfully.
This earlier medications - basically the various biological serums , heavy metal based drugs and the sulfa pills - had dangerous side effects, took a lot longer, were more painful , cost more , required more skill.
Above all, their cure rates were much lower than early penicillin - of the total number of patients both type of medicines treated, penicillin saw far more lives saved.
Only one new disease - SBE - subacute bacterial endocarditis ( the disease that made Rheumatic Fever (RF) so terrifying) was converted from nearly 100% fatal to nearly 100% curable , by penicillin and penicillin alone.
(Thank you Dr Dawson on behalf of my brother Bruce, who got heart valve damage from RF but never got SBE.)
Unbelievably , the Anglo-American medical establishment, taking a page from Hitler's eugenic playbook , used 'military necessity' as an excuse not to give life-saving penicillin to militarily-useless SBE patients.
Unlike Polio research - which was never curtailed during the war and mostly afflicted the middle class (can you say 'doctors', boy and girls ?) , SBE mostly afflicted the minorities, immigrants and the poor.
But perhaps I am telling you something you may have already suspected, bless your cynical little souls ...

Tortoise and Hare : the race between indies and suits for wartime penicillin

The Tortoise was 'indie' penicillin , New York City penicillin , Emma Lazarus penicillin - humanized and naturalized. It had none of the innings for nine tenths of the game but pulled way ahead at the end.
The Hare was 'suits' penicillin : weaponized , synthesized , eugenicized , profitably-patentable, 'I am a Republican in a Democratic administration and I am here to help you 'penicillin.
It was supported by the Anglo-American scientific-medical establishment , by Big Pharma and by the British Conservative-dominated government and some all-powerful agencies of the wartime American government.

Why it took the efforts of seven "lives unworthy of full life" to finally bring penicillin to the rest of us ...
The selfless five of The Seven
Regard closely , if you will, the personal circumstances of Dr Martin Henry Dawson, his teacher wife Marjorie Dawson, doctors Dante Colitti and Thomas Hunter, industrialist Floyd Odlum.
For none of these five (out of the total of seven key - and handicapped - individuals who brought us all penicillin) actually needed penicillin in the early 1940s .
All would have had extra-privileged access to the scarce medication if they had needed it.
So their actions were purely of agape love for others, rather than as part of a patients' advocacy group.
So why were these few , a mere one out of five hundred million of all the people living on the planet in 1943 - so willing to "Act Up" to see that all those dying for lack of wartime penicillin should receive some of the new lifesaver ?
I am convinced that they responded personally - at a deep empathetic level - against the then fashionable eugenic arguments about why the lives of SBE patients were intrinsically unworthy of scarce lifesaving penicillin.
To be Modern was to be Eugenic
It was then fashionable in that besotted - modern - eugenic - age to argue that these 4Fs , born with intellectual and physical challenges and even those who acquired them later in life, were unworthy of the full lives granted to those who was 1A in mind and body.
(This intellectual net thus swept up almost all those (poor or minority) members of society who caught infectious diseases by claiming they had a defective gene that made them get these diseases.)
These "handicapped" or "crippled" members of society might be denied an education, or an fair access to jobs or marriage and children or medical care.
Ultimately some of these handicapped were even denied access to Life itself - murdered by an direct injection as in Nazi Germany or murdered by quiet but deliberate indirect neglect --- as in the rest of the world.
The then popular prejudice - at both the official and popular level against people who wore glasses ("four eyes") - a category that ultimately most of us fits into at some time in our lives - suggests some of the strength of this 'modern era' insanity seeking impossible physical perfection.
Or take "The Greatest Canadian Ever", Baptist minister and socialist politician Tommy Douglas.
He is regarded as the Father of Canadian Medicare - a lifetime spent promoting that cornerstone of Canada's present day egalitarian values : full medical care provided to all Canadians regardless of their social status.
But surprisingly, eighty years ago, this young University of Chicago PhD student in sociology (and at the height of the Great Depression in particularly badly hit Saskatchewan !) still chose an eugenic over a political or economic explanation to account for why so many were living on welfare in his home town of Weyburn.
His highly divisive eugenic values was probably entirely typical of his age group and class in the Canada of the 1930s, just as his later egalitarian values were equally in tune with the egalitarian Canada of the 1980s.
In the 1930s, Douglas seemed to regard almost any physical handicap in the children he visited as something not just genetic and eternal but as a marker of darker moral failings.
But when this net of "handicapped-ness as a symbol for useless and less than fully human" was cast so wide, most should have said to themselves, "they're coming after the SBEs today, but they'll be after all those with congenital or acquired chronic defects tomorrow."
But the world did not - but these five did.
Dawson and his wife had met as fellow wallflowers at a college dance in the dance-obsessed Twenties.
Dawson had been a champion basketball guard as a teen but being twice severely wounded during the war had left him missing the use of one Great Toe and with restricted movement in one arm and shoulder.
Marjorie had been born with a relatively common defect in one hip.
The severity of the condition varies greatly - in her case , despite the best operations money could buy in the Edwardian age - she was left with severe restrictions on her movements , sometimes requiring the use of a cane.
But she was intellectually smarter than others and emotionally livelier as well - but these bonuses didn't compensate for her physical failings in this physical perfection obsessed age.
Dawson had acquired, in late 1940, a severe and probably quickly terminal case of Myasthenia Gravis , then a horribly debilitating chronic disease.
Death usually came from respiratory 'crises' and so he often needed a wheelchair and oxygen assist to get about.
Floyd Odlum had been healthy all his life until his worries over the course of the war gave him an unusual severe case of chronic rheumatoid arthritis , so severe that for the rest of his life only his time in a warm pool ever gave him body and mind some relief.
He walked with crutches, mostly , from then on.
Thomas Hunter had severe polio at an early age - leaving him paralyzed from the waist down and requiring the use of crutches.
Despite this, he was not just a star pupil but also very active in student affairs - including coxing race-winning crews at Harvard and Cambridge.
Dante Colitti came from a poor Italian family living in the crowded Lower East Side - he got TB as a child that went into his spine , leaving him a hunchback and requiring braces and crutches.
He spent years in hospitals and came to admire doctors and their roles.
His hunchback, his Catholicism and his Italian origin held him back in that many-prejudiced age , but he persisted and became a surgeon , though he eventually found he was more useful and much more valued as an unusually skilled anesthetist.
Noteworthy is that none of these five had a normal vocational reason to be involved in penicillin and in treating a heart condition .
They all stepped out of their comfort zone to do good , I believe , because they knew personally what it was like to be handicapped and to feel society's eyes upon them.
And they could all feel in their own bones just how the poor SBEs felt when they were handed their death sentences by an uncaring and eugenic Allied medical establishment ....

Wartime penicillin (discovered in 1928) actually had two miracles.
The first miracle was how the Allies managed to keep new of penicillin's wondrous lifesaving abilities from their own wartime public for so long.
The other miracle was that the Allies managed to produce at least some penicillin - despite their own best efforts - before the war's end.
Bruce Springsteen reminds us that blind faith in our leaders - be they political , military or medical - can get us all killed.
And this was as true during WWII as it still is today.
There are times when the only moral thing to do - the only patriotic thing to do - even during a Total War - is to Act Up.
And because seven cripples had the courage to Act Up over the immoral weaponization of wartime penicillin, the whole world got cheap abundant non-patented penicillin....

A freely available book about one man's struggle to make wartime penicillin freely available
When I started thinking about this project, ten years ago in 2004, I sensed that any book recounting Henry Dawson's heroic efforts to make wartime penicillin freely available to all humanity would itself have be freely available,to be morally effective.
That is, it would have to be released fully into the PUBLIC DOMAIN, to drift about globally like a spore of penicillium, sprouting up on whatever favourable ground it found.
But I also knew that most book reviewers, ironically particularly if left wing or green-oriented, distain reviewing newly published book that were both free and in the public domain.
(Prolific book reviewer George Orwell, as always, was the sturdy exception : he loved pamphleteers and tractarians, collected their work and did a massive book about them.)
And my chances for seeing the book's inspiring message spread by way of movie or musical or hard cover book also lessened if it was PD.
The producers of such expensive and lengthy productions need to be assured of an secure window for all their time and effort, via a copyrighted manuscript being exclusively optioned to them.
So I hemmed and hawed, back and forth.
But since 2004 the economics of book publishing and of web movies and musicals have greatly changed --- as have the life expectancies of general book review sections and their employees.
A web book or movie can be done far faster and cheaper and appeal to a potentially globe wide audience than its old school counterpart.
And when an item, like penicillin spore or a book text , is in the Public Domain and available for all to take up, the forces of competition can freely play themselves out.
Wealthy and well connected producers settling in to leisurely and extravagantly throw up an expensive product about a hot topic can find themselves outflanked by poorer but hungrier rivals who quickly and cheaply get their effort to market first.
(As when Pfizer's John and Mae's Smith public domain penicillin resoundingly beat George W Merck's wannabe-patented penicillin to the crucial D-Day beaches market ---- and Pfizer never looked back.)
Book reviewing hasn't really disappeared --- there are more scholar books than ever but also more scholarly journals than ever to review them.
Similarly every new author with their first self published romance novelette still finds reviews on the zillions of tiny and not so tiny romance genre review blogs .
Books like my "All Life is Family" always tend to do better anyway when general reporters talk them up on the general news pages as newsworthy items in themselves.
In my book's case, a mention can be dropped in as "a new book casts a historical light onto the ongoing debate over Obamacare".
General book reviews sections have shrunk or disappeared altogether because they have become small ghettos in overall newspaper readership -- largely because non-genre "literary" novels , poetry, dramas and short stories have lost most of their intellectual cachet and in fact have been reduced to a high brow genre themselves.
No longer does the well educated citizen feel that if they can't read Don DeLillo 's latest Pulitzer prize winning novel ,that they should at least read a long enough review of it to be able discuss it intelligently at cocktail parties.
If the general book reviewer doesn't need me and this book, the feeling is almost mutual.

No longer does the well educated citizen feel that if they can't read Don DeLillo 's latest Pulitzer prize winning novel ,that they should at least read a long enough review of it to be able discuss it intelligently at cocktail parties.
If the general book reviewer doesn't need me and this book, the feeling is almost mutual.
So, I have finally pulled the plug on the discussion - I have assigned all my rights in my book to the Public Domain and once that is done, there is no putting the genie back....

Finally, a penicillin hero who is NOT "Box Office Poison"
Hollywood has never done a film about the exciting wartime history of the world's best known medicine, penicillin, because the character of two best known protagonists, Alexander Fleming and Howard Fleming - on closer examination - proved 100% pure Box Office poison, particularly to women who are the main customers for medically-oriented dramas.
What exactly Henry Dawson contributed to the success of penicillin has never been in doubt, but what has frustrated American, British and Australian writers on penicillin has been determining just why this normally non-assertive, and now dying, doctor did what he did .
Why exactly did he push so hard and so long to save the "4Fs of the 4Fs" , against the full force of wartime bureaucracy and at the cost of his own life ?
Here indeed was a hero on the Hollywood scale , if only it was clear why he did what he did .
I think the answer as to why he did what he did, is to consider the character-building events in his life, before he settled permanently in New York and ultimately took out American citizenship.
After all, he spent the first two thirds of his relatively short life in Canada , in Nova Scotia ,where he was born and raised, in particular.
An instinctive feel for the uniqueness of Nova Scotia's history and culture in the tremulous period just after the turn of the last century is what all these foreign writers, fine as their other talents are, simply lack.
The story of Henry Dawson's quixotic-seeming but ultimately world-shaking Manhattan Project, his drive to see penicillin provided for ALL humanity, is as much character-driven as it is events-driven.
It is his quietly heroic character that will bring customers to buy the book, see the movie, attend the play and musical, above all to bring out those three hankies.
Any history of wartime penicillin seems like a chaotic jumble of events, one damn thing after another ,with no overarching theme to tie them all together.
But now wartime penicillin will be recast as the leading part of a globe wide conflict, taking place underneath the military events of WWII, between two very different ways of treating our fellow human beings .
And the clashing personalities of Henry Dawson and Howard Florey will aptly represent both sides.

all Life is family : Agape's Manhattan Project
This book is about us.
Ten billion of us, who have indirectly benefited from the efforts of a dying Manhattan doctor to save ten of his fellow beings.
They (and millions of others) were judged as having no military value to WWII. Dismissed as 'lives unworthy of life-saving penicillin'.
That doctor didn't buy Big Pharma's excuses for penicillin's continuing scarcity, 15 years after its discovery. So he 'homebrewed' it and became the first in history to inject penicillin to save lives.
But his efforts were frustrated and censored until patients' families and ordinary GPs started "Acting Up".
They supported Dr Dawson's call to produce "penicillin for ALL humanity".
His moral argument had unexpected economic consequences.
As a result of his campaign, Penicillin G is our cheapest (and hence most widely available) as well as most effective lifesaver. This in turn has given all of us a sort of Herd Immunity against once endemic bacterial diseases.

I'm today's go-to-expert on yesterday's battle over "penicillin-for-all" - by default
While I consider myself the world's leading expert on the wartime battle over the principle of penicillin for all, I also recognize I am also probably the only person in the world who gives a tinker's damn over that 75 year old battle.
A pity that.
Because there are still lessons for today in that old battle, particularly with regards to drugs now costing cancer patients $300,000 a year per person.
For when the wartime general public bested the scientific elites and Big Pharma over the principle of penicillin-for-all, it changed our whole world for the better, forever , in ways few then imagined.
Because penicillin remained totally in the public domain and now had the entire world's public loudly clambering for it, its cost fell quickly to record low levels for such an effective, safe lifesaver.
It was thus given to the poorest patient in the most remote parts of the world , people normally left untreated due to cost.
It thereby knocked out the traditional residual pools for virulent strains of bacteria that kept their names household scourges by remaining endemic or epidemic for millenniums.
Millions were directly treated by penicillin G to save their lives but billions of us indirectly benefited - free of charge ! - by a form of quasi-herd immunity.
As we move to rationing expensive drugs, let us ask ourselves if the example of the battle over wartime penicillin does not suggest a better way ...

If wartime penicillin was a wah pedal ....
Imagine the Nobel prize winner for medicine , Baron Howard Florey, being pulled off his efforts to discover new antibiotics in the late 1940s by an impatient Leo Fender.
Leo pleads, "Howard,make me a wah pedal, and make it quick ; I need something unique for my new guitar and amp line".
Howard takes his time, and delivers the pedal years late. But it is beautiful finished and has a high fidelity electronic circuit that is so pure that it delivers vanishingly small amounts of harmonic distortion (albeit at the cost of an anemic output).
I can already hear guitar players going "Oh, goody !"
Luckily for humanity, Leo has also telepathed the spirit of penicillin pioneer Henry Dawson back to earth and given him the same assignment.
Early next morning, Henry has the job all done : a crude but workable bread-board design, with screamingly high distortion impurities, but with a low battery drain design and the effect level preset on 11 on a scale of one to ten (aka ("stun").
It is very basic looking , with just one big button, set in the very middle of the sturdy front panel of the wah pedal.

That 'ever-climbing' Aussie Howard Florey: year by year his listed degrees got longer and longer
While we all know the differences between a BA, MA and PhD , few of us can fathom the distinctions between a BM/MB, and DM/M.D. in the field of medicine --- even when our life literally depends on it.
Most of us today, particularly in North America, tend to regard as the only real medical doctor someone who not merely has a degree of some sort from a medical school, but who has also passed an internship at a hospital (if not a residency), in addition to passing a local medical society's entry exams and gaining some hospital admitting privileges.
We tend to think , in other words, that the only real medical doctor is a full MD in the lay sense of that technical term, who is licensed to deal directly with acutely ill patients , giving them all forms of narcotics and IV needles, can perform minor outpatient operations and is able to admit them to nearby large general hospitals.
In the British Commonwealth (outside of Canada), rather than a doctorate in medicine (M.D.) being the first medical degree, it is one reserved for medical researchers doing a PhD thesis in medicine. (DM=PhD in medicine= MD.)
One gets an initial BM/BS (BM=MB) and then goes off for various internships, residencies, local medical society and or speciality society exams, hospital admitting privileges etc just as brand new MDs do in North America.
Interestingly, none of the many people included in the Oxford team that Howard Florey assembled to develop penicillin were full MDs, in that lay sense of the word, including Florey himself.
(So Dr Florey was licensed, but only to do operations on research animals but not licensed to deal with humans in the local general hospital..... Dr Chain wasn't even licensed to give needles to research animals !)
But in 1944, his old university in Adelaide gave Florey an honorary M.D. degree and he used it for the rest of his life with pride, as he did all of his honorary degrees.... without indicating their honorary nature.
His first well-known article (on penicillin) in 1940, lists him only as having a M.B.
By 1941 with his second article on penicillin, he could and did add a FRS to that.
By 1949 he is listed ,as chief author of the two volume history called simply "Antibiotics", with a MA, MD, PhD and FRS : that old oddball MB is forgotten history.
By, contrast Henry Dawson's rival penicillin effort had a much smaller team of just four people, but both he and Dr Meyer had M.D.s ---- an important distinction in 1940s American research hospitals, where by contrast with today, the PhD was a low degree indeed.
(His other team members ? Hobby had a PhD in bacteriology and Chaffee a BSc in chemistry.)
Florey's team was oriented by their training and hence personal inclination , to fundamental research on on the nature of penicillin and away from saving individual lives.

Wartime Penicillin was a race between a Tortoise and a Hare,unexpectedly the Tortoise won but the Hare got to phone-in the results...
People invariably find the story of wartime penicillin fascinating because 75 years after the earliest events, it still remains a real puzzler with lots of inexplicables and unanswered questions.
The story of wartime penicillin is actually quite clear.... but it is its history that seems so full of holes and silences.
A great Russian poet once voiced the thought that lovers only sing love songs when they are far apart --- when they are together they have much better things to do.
So too with the winners in the race to define and provide wartime penicillin.
The selfless nature of the objectives of those who won the race suggests that they might be equally self-effacing in the moment of triumph : just glad that penicillin was being made available to all, at a reasonable price, and before the six year long war ended.
The losers in the penicillin race were grasping and ambitious and lost so dramatically and so unexpectedly , and so it would seem natural for them to seek a form of physic revenge by re-writing the history of wartime history.
The losers were, in part, from the government side of the race and they had lots of taxpayers money to write and publish huge official histories.
Even after that, they held most of the solid documentation (which they thoughtfully marked as "secret" during the war) in their official archives.
The same governments that , after the war, offered to generously fund all academic researchers and research projects - that they approved of .
The losers were also Big Pharma , who held much of the unpleasant details in their closely guarded archives but who were willing to fund researchers and open their archives in a limited fashion to them, provided the drug executives had reason to feel the researchers were sympathetic to their view point.
And all the secondary researchers ever since have had to scramble from pillar to post to get any sort of firm information about the winning side of the race for penicillin , while information from the losers comes at them by the trainload in war friendly well light archives in Washington and London.
How balanced an account can we expect even the most dispassionate author to provide under those circumstances ?
My job , as I see it , is not to be dispassionate but rather a partisan for the winning side : but not to be a partisan for anybody on the winning side.
I will seek to establish a firm , fact-based chronology when things did happen (and more importantly, did not happen) and try to follow the money trail : ignoring talk and claims and promises for cold hard cash (and again : more importantly, lack of evidence of cold hard cash.)
I will review all contemporary claims of penicillin yields to judge if they were credible-- and few were.
Above all, I will separate clearly when the contemporary numbers refer to absolute amounts and when they refer to relative amounts of penicillin : for this is one of the widest failings in all accounts about penicillin and one that is at the very core of the muddle about wartime penicillin.
The winning side wanted larger and larger absolute amounts of penicillin --- to help those dying of infection, in all countries, as soon as possible.
The relative purity of those absolute units of therapeutic penicillin interested them not in the slightest : greater and greater production of absolute units of therapeutic penicillin was their only concern.
Four daily injections of 500 cc of crude penicillin juice , with about 2 units of penicillin per filtered ml of medium, (4000 units of absolute penicillin per day , in total) was judged useful to Australian Jimmy Duhig because it saves a mother's live , even though that material (in relative terms of purity) was only 1 part per million of the medium !
By way of pointed contrast, his fellow Australian Howard Florey was very proud in getting a single milligram of solid penicillin from the same amount and strength of penicillin juice, because it assayed at 450 units per mg, ie 25% pure.
Duhig's yield of therapeutic penicillin was 100% because he lost nothing trying to purify it - and the impurities in his penicillin juice caused his patient no more than temporary discomfort.
Florey's yield was 12% , because his repeated attempts to purify his penicillin juice resulted in huge losses and huge destruction of the basic penicillin ---- and it introduced toxic chemical contaminants worse than the natural impurities it sought to get rid of !
A patient receiving this material as medicine would get much less penicillin and probably find it more painful to boot.
But thankfully , patients didn't usually get this sort of penicillin from Florey.
His patient-directed penicillin was only purified to about 40 units per mg, and while nominally 'dirtier' , was actually probably safer than the early 'pure' variety : and certainly the yield was much higher and so the patient got more absolute units of germ killing power.
(Bacteria are only killed by absolute amounts of penicillin not by its relative purity : after all, the greatest diluter of penicillin - by far - is not the original pint of medium fluid but rather the quarts of blood fluid in the human body !)
No, the "pure" (high relative purity) penicillin was a holy grail sought for only one reason : we need pure penicillin to determine its chemical nature for then Man can hope to artificially synthesize it and push Mother Nature out of the picture entirely.
Millions of patients died, needlessly, during the 15 plus years of this fruitless quest.
Wouldn't you also want to cover your tracks in this shameful episode of your life....
